Personal Development 101 – Module 2 The Most Important Component In Achieving A Goal
Hi, and welcome to week two of Personal Development 101!
In this second module we’ll be talking about goals, and set one goal to focus on this year. Just like last week, I’ve included a worksheet that takes just a few minutes to fill out to help guide you.

Course Recap
Last week we discussed your dreams and life purpose. Just in case you missed it, here’s the previous course module:
Personal Development 101 – Module 1 What The Most Successful People Have In Common
The Most Important Component in Achieving a Goal
Pull out your worksheet from last week. If you’re like me, you may have struggled a little to boil it down to a single life purpose. Many of your dreams may have had a common theme, but some may be going off in different directions.
To get the most out of these next few weeks we are going to employ a simple strategy to harness what Leo Babauta calls the “most important component in achieving a goal“
Listen to this:
“You should choose one long-term goal that you want to accomplish this year. Just one goal, to allow you to focus on that goal completely. Only choose one — if you choose too many, you will lose focus, and focus is the most important component in achieving a goal.”
– Leo Babauta in Zen To Done
You may think that this is too little – why only one goal?
The reason is this: It’s best to start off with one goal so that we can work on building a repeatable process.
Many people I know start off very ambitious, and embark on lots of life changes at once – but it’s very hard to change many different things, and keep track of everything, especially if you are new to personal development.
There will be plenty of time to accomplish all your goals, but for now, let’s give it a shot with just one goal – at least for a month. If you change your mind and want to add more goals, add them in then – but why not at least try it the way I suggest first?
Exercise 2
- Pick one of you dreams. Review your list, and pick a single dream to focus on.
- “Backwards Plan” The Steps. Think of the step immediately before you achieve your dream, and then continue stepping backward until you reach where you currently are in your progress. For example, if you want to have a million dollars in the bank, perhaps the steps before that are $900,000, $800,000 and so on.
- Pick A Step You Can Achieve This Year. Don’t be overly pessimistic – if anything, I would err slightly on the side of optimism. Challenge yourself!
- Brainstorm A Next Step You Can Accomplish This Week. It doesn’t have to be a huge step. However small it is, the important thing is that it must be something you can use as a stepping stone to further progress.
- Take Action Today. While writing everything down it important, ultimately this isn’t a course for writing – this is a course about doing, and really changing your life. If possible, take a small step today that moves you towards your goal. It can be as small as a phone call to gather information, but do something right away to cement the change in your mind. Taking even a small action makes the commitment much more real in your mind and will dramatically make it more likely you will follow through on your larger goals.
Here’s a worksheet you can fill out. Please download it to your computer and open it. Click to download it now – Module 2 – Single Goal Planning Worksheet (PDF).
So do your homework, keep in touch, and please email me anytime. I’ll be in touch very soon.
Once you complete it, you will have today made progress towards one of your dreams!
And don’t forget – read your life purpose to yourself three times daily. I know you’re going to succeed – you’re doing great so far!
Sincerely,
Sid Savara
