Personal Development 101 – Module 3 The Biggest Obstacle Stopping You From Achieving Your Goals

Hi, and welcome to week three of Personal Development 101!
- Sid Savara

So far we’ve discussed your dreams, put them together in a life purpose, and by now you should have decided on one goal to focus on this year.

Just in case you missed it, here’s last week’s lessons:

This week we’ll take a break from planning, and look at the biggest obstacle standing in the way of you accomplishing your goals.

The Biggest Obstacle Stopping You From Achieving Your Goals

One of the biggest roadblocks I personally faced in personal development was a nagging feeling that I was doing too little.   I felt like I wasn’t making effective progress towards my goals because I simply wasn’t doing enough, and I kept trying to pile different things on for myself to accomplish.

In reality, I was completely wrong – the real problem I was doing too much.  Remember what we discussed last week about taking on too many goals?

“You should choose one long-term goal that you want to accomplish this year. Just one goal, to allow you to focus on that goal completely. Only choose one — if you choose too many, you will lose focus, and focus is the most important component in achieving a goal.”
– Leo Babauta in
Zen To Done

Not only was I taking on too many goals – but I was spending too much time doing things I didn’t need to do, which is where that nagging feeling of never working enough on my goals came from!

In this module and week, we’ll look at reducing your commitments.

Exercise 3

  1. Where Do I Waste Time? This is a tough one, but the way I look at it is like this: what activities provided no long term value to my life?  Sitting around wasting time online, and watching television are two of my weaknesses that I personally need to constantly keep in check.
  2. What Can I Let Go of and Stop Doing? Are there things you said “yes” to in the past out of obligation? Are you doing certain things that no longer benefit you (or perhaps, anyone) and you do them only because you feel you have to? What no longer provides value, or do I do out of obligation?
  3. What Can I Hire Someone Else To Do? Are there tasks you do that you can outsource? Are there things that need to be done – but perhaps not by you?

Once again, here’s a helpful, simple worksheet you can fill out. Please download it to your computer and open it.

So do your homework, keep in touch, and please email me anytime.   I’ll be in touch very soon.

Remember to read your life purpose daily, and focus on weekly progress towards your goal!  It’s the little steps that will get you there.  Don’t break the chain.

Sincerely,

P.S.  A great book on the subject of not just simplifying your commitments, but also simplifying your life is The Simple Guide To a Minimalist Life.  It’s written by Leo Babauta, and contains strategies and techniques for how to get more out of you life, by focusing on less, and getting the most out of that – richer life experiences.  It’s a quick easy read, and you can get a a chapter free (no strings attached, no purchase needed) if you click here to read my review.
