Personal Development 101 – Module 7 Nobody Makes It Alone

Hi, and welcome to week seven of Personal Development 101!
- Sid Savara

Very often I look at personal development and accomplishing my goals as an individual effort – me against the world! However, I’m never really alone.  Though I know nobody will accomplish my dreams for me, my network helps me with resources, advice and providing support.  For example, even in writing this course I have borrowed ideas from some of my friends and mentors’ books, including Reclaim Your Dreams, The Simple Guide to a Minimalist Life, and 7 Simple Steps.  I have spoken to and received advice from all of those authors, and their support has helped me accomplish some of my personal goals – as well as put together this course =).

In my personal life, my family and close friends have likewise always supported me – whether it’s in school, my career, my dreams, or overcoming personal failures.   I am sure I would not be where I am today without the support network I have. When I have had questions or struggles, having people to turn to has made the difference in helping me bounce back – or in overcoming obstacles to accomplish more than I ever thought possible.  In other cases, when I’ve needed skill specific advice, I’ve either found a specific person in my network who can help me, or joined clubs and forums, in person or online, where people are aiming for similar goals, and have formed connections with like minded people to help me towards my goals.

Finally, sometimes just knowing that I have people’s support is enough – I don’t need to contact people and ask for a pep talk, just knowing they are there if I need it helps me out.

Exercise 7 – Identifying Your Support Network

This week’s exercise is straightforward, but the important thing is what you do with it.   At this point you have dreams and goals you are working towards accomplishing – and if you’re stuck, it may be time to see if there’s someone in your network you can turn to for help or support.

  1. Who’s on your side? Which people can you turn to when you need support?
  2. If you have a specific goal you are trying to accomplish – which people can help you with it? Which communities can you join?

If you’d like a printable worksheet with these questions, you can get it here – Module 7 – My Support Network (PDF)

A final thought – a support network isn’t just about what everyone can do for you. Consider also your role, how much you matter to your friends and family – and how you can help them out. As Jonathan Wells puts it:

“[B]ecome a positive influence on those around you… [L]ook for ways to contribute to family, friends and community.  Freely giving of yourself to help others is truly a win-win situation.  The more you can help others, the more you will help yourself.”
- Jonathan Wells in 7 Simple Steps

Have a great day, and I’ll talk to you soon!

Sincerely,

Sid Savara
