Migrate from WordPress.com to a Self Hosted WordPress Blog

Note – this step assumes you have already installed wordpress with CPanel. If you haven’t, go back and read that article =)

Migrate from WordPress.com to a Self Hosted WordPress Blog

If you are migrating from a free WordPress.com blog, this is the time to migrate from WordPress.com to a self hosted WordPress.org blog install.

There are only a few steps you need to follow in order to migrate, but the most important (and the Sid secret sauce) is step #3

  1. Go login to your WordPress.com blog and search for “Export”
  2. Click “Export” and export all your blog entries. Save the file it gives you.
  3. Open the file in Notepad. Search for “oldaddress.wordpress.com” and replace it with “www.mynewdomain.com.” This way all your links between posts with get updated properly.
  4. Go to your brand new WordPress blog and click “Import”
  5. Import the file you just downloaded
  6. Examine your handiwork – all your posts should now be imported into your new blog!

The only issue now is your images are still stored on your old WordPress.com blog.  There is no good solution for that at this point, and I suggest you just leave them there.  Upload new ones into your self hosted blog – the old pictures aren’t going anywhere.

When you have time, I recommend you go back to your old blog and edit each article by hand, to be a summary of the article and then link to the article on your new blog. That way visitors who somehow end up at the old article have a place to go.

Once you’ve completed this step, it’s time to set up some free services to help your wordpress blog – including email subscriptions and a variety of analytics for measuring traffic and RSS subscribers.  Don’t worry – it’s easy and I’ll walk you through it.
