Pretty powerful idea here. Sid I have never really analyzed this the way you have, but I like it. I haven't ever even thought about classifying my time. Now I will have to be more aware of it though. I am thinking as I write this though, that I have classified it maybe. I always see time as currency, and if you spend it, you don't have a 30 day money back guarantee so you better spend it wisely.

That's how I see it!

What do you think Sid? Does it make sense?

Hey Richard,

Thanks for your comment man! Funny enough, most of my "Free" time is used
to pursue my goals, but part of that is I enjoy a lot of my side projects -
guitar, working out, etc =)

I know what you mean here, Sid. Time that is free does not mean that is has no value. Free time can be used to relax from all the non free time that you've been using to pursue your goals. It's still being used effectively though.

Hey Anthony!

Thanks for the comment man!

You know, I think with you working on projects, outsourcing, flipping
websites - it probably really is important to have some idle time to think
things through =). I know if I don't have time to think and step back, I
lose perspective of a lot of things. Like you said, definitely not a waste
of time =)

Great post Sid! :) Definitely making me re-evaluate my concept of 'free' time. I like the last one though, converting it from 'free' as in no value, to 'free' as in freedom... that resonates with me because for me that's what my free time feels like... freedom from my old J.O.B., freedom from any current responsibilities, and freedom to spend it however I'd like!

Warm regards,
C

Good stuff.

I especially like your re-framing that *free time is never free.* I prefer that to freedom time ... which just reminds me of freedom fries.

I used to refuse to schedule free time, because then it didn't feel free. The reality is, if I didn't schedule it, it didn't happen. Once I got over that mental hurdle, carving out free time by design, really re-shaped my view and appreciation of time that I choose to be spend on whatever I want. It's my discretionary time that I earned and deliberately traded up for, even if it's for spending on doing nothing :)

I especially like your re-framing that *free time is never free.* I prefer that to freedom time … which just reminds me of freedom fries.

A great article Sid - my "free" time really is just idle time when I'm chilling out on purpose in order to get my thoughts processed. I don't see this as a waste of time.

Sid, I like the "freedom time" term, although I think most folks can distinguish which meaning of "free" to attach to the time that they can use for whatever they want.

Thanks for getting me to think more deeply about time.

Maybe I'll go give a listen to the old Chambers Brothers song "The Time Has Come Today"!

Some great thoughts here. I guess to me "free" time is not "unvalued" time but time in which I've got permission to do whatever I like (however unproductive that may be!) I definitely think about my time differently now that I work for myself, rather than in a 9-5 office job.

Definitely some food for thought here. I'll mull it over a bit, and may post something time-related on Aliventures.

(Thanks for the links too, btw!)

This article has made me change my perspective on life and set me thinking.
I had thought a lot of these things myself. For example I now work from home. I have given up my car. I walk a lot. But your ideas Sid have really got me thinking even more about how I can improve my life as I am still having a tendency to think in a slave like manner and work all hours from home. Now that I made the switch I tend to think now I have no car or have fewer clothes that I am now poor.

My health and well being are paramount. How does one focus on that with out it all getting you down. (It hard to express what I mean)
