For time tracking software I have been using Time Tracker. A great free option for anyone running Linux/Ubuntu.
Hey Huey,

Thanks for the comment, and great observation - not knowing where my time
goes absolutely drives me nuts. Especially if I look back and I haven't
accomplished much that day, and I can't remember why! ;)

Hey Jonny,

Agreed! I like sending my Twitter feed to Google Reader via RSS. Although
it's always tempting, like when I'm waiting for someone or well..frankly,
when I am procrastinating =P

Hey Raam,

Thanks for the comment! Twitter is like the ultimate gambling addiction for
me. Refresh, new links - did I hit the jackpot yet? No? Ok, refresh - new
links!

I don't really tally time too carefully with Google Calendar - mostly I just
use the colors to visualize where my time is going and every so often will
manually tally it up in a spreadsheet.

I like the idea of heatmapping productivity. I have a sort of different take
on the subject - I try to do the most important/difficult task I can stand.
If I can't stand it, I pick the next most difficult ;)

That sounds sort of masochistic, but that way when I'm productive I feel it
is a pretty good heuristic for picking what I ought to be doing!

Hey Ali,

Thanks for the comment! You're right - for people who are as productive as
you, time tracking might be overkill and take away from well deserved
resting and recharge time ;)

Yo Srinivas,

Hehe thanks for the comment and the compliment ;)

I've never heard of Slife but that sounds pretty cool. I once had an idea
for a Firefox extension that would randomly redirect me to my Wordpres edit
post page when I was visiting Facebook or Twitter too often. I tend to be
pretty good about it though as long as I check RescueTime - it shames me
into behaving! ;)

Hey there Glen,

Thanks so much for your comment! I play guitar too, and I usually sneak it
in when I'm supposed to be working on something else ;). Like you I also
found it opened up a whole new world for me - especially when I went to open
mics!

Hey Thursday,

I know what you mean! Though I am guilty of watching TED talks and
rationalizing that it's different since I'm learning something - but very
often really it's just entertainment for me, since I'm not actually going to
do anything with that new information, I just think TED talks are cool!

Hi Rebecca!

Thanks for the comment! (Though I am SO late on replying). I can't take all
the credit for the log sheets, I found them online - but I did remake nicer
looking ones for personal development 101 ;)

I haven't tried ManicTime but it does sound very similar. In RescueTime I
dread seeing too much time spent at google.com/reader ;)

Hey Eduard,

Thanks for the comment! You're right, I think often when we track what
we're doing, we realize 1) a lot of the time we are "busy" is more
"busywork" and 2) Those "10 minute breaks" are usually a lot longer than 10
minutes! =)

Hey Marc,

Thanks for your comment! You know, that sounds very similar to some of the
advice Leo from Zen Habits (and I'm sure others, like yourself) discuss -
focusing on the most important tasks first.

My favorite wording is from Brian Tracy - Eat that Frog! I love the
analogy, that if you're going to eat a frog, you may as well get it over
with ;). Though sometimes my important tasks aren't quite that unpleasant!

Excellent post Sid, especially the last 3rd where you explain how you track your time.
I'm now using a combination of paper, resucetime and google calendar myself to track where the 168 hours go.

Just an observation: I think stress and overwhelm doesn't come from being too busy and not having enough time but rather from not knowing exactly where all the hours go.

Huey
