Hey Sid.

Good point there about putting emotion into the body. A thank-you card that is mostly about facts would seem like an awkward required action. Detailing emotions lets the other person know there is appreciation there, and it isn't all about just looking appropriate. Getting the specific point in is also relevant, as they will probably wonder what it is about.

I'd say thank-you card and messages are not made often at all, and show a big understanding. Those few that use them to show appreciation understand the effort others put out for them.

Thanks Sid. This is very good article and i really like the tips you shared. Just check, for Chinese, it seems that we do not use thank you card often, and in this case, i guess thank you email is more appropriate combining Chinese habit and the spirit of thank you card.

Personally, I'm a big fan of sending out handwritten thank you notes when I have the opportunity to do so. There's a big difference in how a quick email is received, compared to a note that the recipient knows you had to think about writing, find an envelope and get it to the post office.

Great tips, Sid! I think that for many people, a physical card/note comes across as more meaningful than email — it certainly wouldn't offend me to receive thank-yous by email though.

I think the greeting (and the tone of the whole note) can depend a bit on who you're writing to. I tend to write “Dear” to my grandmothers and other older relatives.

Like you, I agree that starting with a clear thesis statement is important: even if you include some news or general chatter in the note, the point is that you're saying thanks!
