I really have a hard time staying in on the weekends, and im trying to do this because im really trying to get back in shape. Ive tried the only going out one day a week thing and although its ok , i still find that it takes me a day or two to recover from a hangover hahaha, therefore it leads me to not working out or making poor eating decisions. Im 30 years old and ive never had this problem in the past, can self discipline deteriorate with age ? I do realize that maybe i shouldnt go out out at all but then i feel like im depriving myself of going out and socializing and enjoying myself...Any advice?

Hi Jesus,

First off thank you for visiting my site, and adding some real meat to the
discussion. Thank you for sharing some information about yourself, and
raising what i think is a very interesting question

I am continually learning, but I have not specifically researched the
connection between depleted will power and depression. Depression is a
very, very complex process and I am concerned that making broad
generalizations here may be dangerous. With that disclaimer, there is some
interesting information I can think of.

Because we know that both striving towards rewards and depression share some
similar pathways in the brain, in particular with regard to dopamine
receptors, that would be a good place to start. I suspect there are
definitely connections between depression and will power, for example,
consider what happens if we flip the question. Is it possible that being
depressed depletes willpower? I know that some of the symptoms associated
with depression include decreased drive and motivation, which certainly
would be tied to staying with long term tasks.

I suspect rather than having a direct effect on each other, there are
complex processes at work in our brain that affect both (willpower and state
of mind/mood), rather than willpower and depression having direct effects on
each other.

I would definitely be interested in hearing if you learn more as well!

Hi Eric,

Thanks so much for your comment and kind words. I really appreciate the
time you took to leave me a message. I hope my articles do help you find
answers to your questions. I similarly remember times when I felt I was
wasting days and hours not accomplishing anything, and I'm sure you'll find
the answers you seek - even if I don't know all of them, I do hope that my
writing helps you find them.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

Do you happen to know the connection between a depleted will power or self-discipline to depression. I am looking back at my manic depression episode and really think my depletion of self-discipline due to school, trouble at home, keeping a diet, friends, and lack of motivation from me and others lead to that deep depression. I'm alright now but it would be nice to know of any research of that.

Sid, I think that what you are doing here is really kind. Bet it helps you stay motivated, too. I found myself reading your articles because of the crash of my life...Im 19, addicted to television, computer games, alcohol, tobacco....im wasting days, not hours, accomplishing nothing, don`t have any idea for my future, nor any plan. It almost seems to me that i don`t know what i like. Seeing that your website is non-beneficial and you really want to help people, motivates me alot. I will continue on reading your articles finding help and answers to my questions. Thank you very much, Sid!

Hey Conor,

Thanks for your comment - and the link, it was a great read =)

Along the same lines as the quote you mentioned, my soccer coach in high
school (or was it basketball?) used to remind us that "he is out there - and
he is training." It was a reminder whenever we started getting lazy in our
drills or felt to tired to practice, or were just plain sloppy - that during
this same time we were wasting, our competition was out there: and he was
training

I love the depth of research. I had put together (for my own purposes) a list of daily habits of fulfilled people http://www.conorneill.com/2009/10/17-daily-pers... and love to see that practice improves self discipline, stress reduces and positive self-affirmations improve it. Another quote that i like "incremental change almost always wins".
