Thanks so much for your comment and kind words. I really appreciate it.

I have had similar thoughts - through blogs and the internet, I've met many
wonderful people who share similar goals and interests to me, people who I
am sure I would have never have met if not for their blogs!

You sound like you've got the drive, I'm sure you'll get to that level of
optimal performance you're seeking!

I loved the analogy of work = plough, passion = puppy! I've definitely experienced plenty of those days/nights of endless “passionate work” where I forget to sleep (and don't even want to sleep!).

Hi Sid, I like the analogy of the plough and the puppy. I think when you're passionate about something, it takes care of itself. It's like you get into a state of flow and you're fingers just start typing away if you're writing about something you enjoy. If you hate what you're doing, it may feel as if you're dragging something heavy with you everywhere. This can be a major roadblock that can take hours to finish, breaking us down mentally and emotionally.

Congratulations to you both on the launch of BlogcastFM, it already looks like high value work, which is appreciated. Although I understand the passion argument it has now been framed as a “good vs evil” debate that I find unnecessary. Beyond just sustained motivation people should look for ways to sustain themselves in their current employment (what you term as work). I am not telling anyone to not follow their dreams but I think the responsibility is on the individual to look for motivation and growth in their work situation. That said, great post Sid.//Marc

Hey Sid. Keep up the good work! I have been thinking the same with building momentum and getting into the zone. I found out that the way to get into the zone is to build the momentum with simple tasks. After a while the hard tasks gets simple and you feel nothing is impossible and you can do it faster than anyone else. That is a wonderfull feeling of mastery.

I built a complete product this way and released it to 50 customers spanning 300.000 users. What i wasnt prepared for was the amount of support and negotiations this would cause. Well, the support scaled and the work was stalling up because I was on the phone or email helping customers from 8:00-19:00 everyday, from 19:00-24:00 I was implementing new features and improvments. Even the weekends went to fixing things for the customers. After 13 months, the incoming mails dropped from 200 to 10 and I could not understand what was happening. After the 14 month I got 5 mails a week so I decided to call my customers to see what was going on. My fear was that they had stopped to use my product, but everything was fine and they loved it and they loved the support. My motivation is getting back and now I am mentally ready to hire people. I managed to stay in for the whole storm and I feel stronger. This kind of experience is something you cant get without doing it. For
anyone that feels like they are in a helpless situation like I was I can tell you that if you keep working hard it will turn-around with time and it is worth it! Stick in and do your best!

While an interesting post Sid, I think labeling work as something we don't want to do is taking away something from the great power that work has.

You can have passion for your work and you can work for your passion. Passion is a great motivator to pursue work, but it is not a replacement for work.

Things don't just get done based on your passion, your passion gets you to work to get things done.
