I'm a fan of NetNewsWire on the Mac, personally. I use 4 different Macs, and it's been a boon to processing large RSS sets quickly.

It syncs with the cloud, so all my machines are always up to date with my subscriptions and the read/unread/flagged status of each item.

Additionally, their iPhone app is extremely sophisticated; much better than any other mobile RSS reader I've ever seen. It syncs with my data, too.

There's also a web interface for NNW; however, being in IT, I rarely don't have a machine with me.

It's also free ;)

Hi Barbi,

Definitely agree - some days there's only so much time available to get
everything done =). I try to just keep time slicing and multi-tasking
separate so I don't fool myself into thinking I can always do two things at
once.

I tried OMEA reader before, I remember it was excellent and well put
together. I've long been a fan of desktop clients, but Google Reader won me
over a couple years ago - and once they added Google Gears, I was set. I
just turn on Gears before I head on a plane etc and I have tons of offline
reading material.

Thanks for your comment!

So much great info in this article. I am a "time-slicer" in many areas of my life, and find that it works well for me, even though other people might find it too chaotic. Also love your method with Google reader - I use OMEA reader and it works well for flagging items in different colors for items to read later, comment on, keep for reference, etc.
Barbi

Hi Ari!
I still follow the same basic routine. About the only thing that has
changed is I continually ruthlessly re-prioritize and unsubscribe from
feeds. I recently unsubscribed from Digg, TechCrunch and Delicious
"popular" bookmarks - the best ones from all those come to me through
StumbleUpon, Hacker News and Twitter anyway =).

I think I now probably spend on average an hour every couple days in Google
Reader, and spend much more time Stumbling and reading links via Twitter -
so much time previously was spent just hitting next and sorting through the
noise. Using StumbleUpon and Twitter, I probably process half as many
items in Google Reader now, but still get most of the same news I would
otherwise.

Grok2 - thank you for visiting, and also thanks for the heads up! I think
you have just given me a new tool to review ;). I do in fact use MS Outlook,
because the syncing with blackberry and everywhere else is so key for GTD
and keeping my contacts synced up.

For effectively managing email, you should really check out popfile.sf.net -- using bayesian classification, you can tag emails and send less important mail to sub-folders to be looked at later (in bulk) while mail needing immediate attention can be tagged to remain in the inbox. After a little bit of training, this system is really effective. If you use MSOutlook, a free addon http://www.vargonsoft.com/Outclass/ can be intergrated into outlook to do the same. Very effective. (I am not associated with either, but am a happy user (of both)).
