Hey Roger,

Haha! Don't even get me started on how long my todo list is! =)

The best part for me is that it really makes me focus on what's most
important. If I tell myself I am going to spend 4 hours a week reading
books, and that's it, I really prioritize and stop reading junk that I was
reading just because I happened to have it around and was procrastinating.

Although it's easier said than done! Some days my budget just gets
completely destroyed as I spend all of it hanging out with friends or
family. Though I don't mind that so much =)

I've never mapped out my time before. I do make a daily/weekly to do list. I am going to give this a shot. Now to just put it on my to do list! :)

Yep, although money's steadier now than when I started freelancing (I turn down most gigs I'm offered now!) … there's still a part of me which thinks that I should be working on something *paying*.

I guess my equivalent of Sid's method is having a block on my “to-do” list for my two key projects (both not yet paying) and to make sure I do at least something on each of them every day.

I think a lot of people struggle with deciding what's a priority when they don't have a lot of external input. Ali, I'm also working on an MA and it's so tough to decide how much time to spend on homework and such — after all, it's not bringing in cash today.

It's so tempting to push things off until next week or next month — the credit card of time management — but, Sid, I think your budgeting system really addresses that problem.

I love that comment too, Thursday! :-) And I'm with you; when I worked full time, I had a similar weekday structure to Sid — 7.5 hrs work, 1.5 hr commute — and I knew I had quite limited pockets of time for “my” stuff.

Now I'm partly freelancing, partly trying to do more entreprenurial things and partly studying for a creative writing MA and working on a novel … my time doesn't fit nicely into boxes any more!

But still, Sid, this is a really interesting post, and not an approach I've taken in any consistent way. There's definitely a lot of food for thought here.

Very useful article, Sid. Do you have any pointers on how to make time more fungible? Here's a quote from a productivity essay by software developer and writer Aaron Swartz:

Such comments imply that time is “fungible” — that time spent watching TV can just as easily be spent writing a novel. And sadly, that’s just not the case.

Time has various levels of quality. If I’m walking to the subway station and I’ve forgotten my notebook, then it’s pretty hard for me to write more than a couple paragraphs. And it’s tough to focus when you keep getting interrupted. There’s also a mental component: sometimes I feel happy and motivated and ready to work on something, but other times I feel so sad and tired I can only watch TV.

Thanks so much for your comment, I really appreciate it!

I use Rescuetime to track time on my computer, so that takes care of a fair
number of hours. Physical items though, I like to use excel. I know it's
not optimized for it, but spreadsheets are just really easy for me. I've
tried different project management and time tracking applications, and I
just never really found anything I liked
